When buying a ring online, getting the right size can be a challenge. However, contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be in the store in person to get a tightly-fitting ring. Here are the four things you need to know about measuring your ring size when buying jewelry online.

Understanding Ring Sizing
In the US, ring sizes are measured on a scale from 3 to 15, with 3 being the smallest size on offer, and 15 being the largest. The numbers refer to the inner circumference of the band, with each size adding around 2-3 mm in circumference from the preceding size.

It is also possible to get rings made in half sizes. There will be times when size 6 ring, for example, fits too tightly and becomes uncomfortable, but a size 7 ring is too loose and could easily become dislodged. In these instances, a size 6.5 would provide the optimum fit for the circumference of your finger.Ring

It is even possible to get quarter sizes, and in some cases, you will find “loose” and “tight” labels attached to sizes, which essentially refer to 1/8 sizes. For example, a ring labelled a loose 7 is really a 7 1/8.

Don’t Use String or Paper to Measure Ring Size
One of the most common pieces of bad advice available online is that you should use a piece of string or paper to measure the circumference of the finger to determine ring size. However, neither of these methods is foolproof and both lead to inaccuracies. The string has some elasticity in it and can stretch when tied around the finger, which will skew the measurement. Paper is also highly susceptible to humidity and cool temperatures will cause it to shrink.

Additionally, tying a piece of string around the finger or marking a piece of paper won’t consider the size of the joint. To get the ring on, your loved one will have to slide the ring over the joint. If this is significantly larger than the final resting position on the finger, the ring won’t fit.

Trace an Existing Ring
The best way to measure ring size is by using an existing ring that you know fits the finger perfectly. Place it on a sheet of paper and trace the inside circumference. You can then use a ring sizing sheet available online or on Pinterest to determine what size the ring is. This is more reliable than paper and string methods.

This will also remove any discrepancies in the measurements caused by the temperature and time of year. In the warm summer months, fingers swell and in the cold fingers shrink. Just because your finger is one size in the cooler months, doesn’t mean it will remain that size in the warmer months.Online shop

If in Doubt, Go Bigger
If you are still unsure, always err on the side of caution and get the bigger size. It is easier to resize a ring to make it smaller than it is to make a ring bigger. Jewelers can remove segments, or, failing that, small beads can be added to the inside of the band to create a snugger fit.
